New Version of the ISO 20000-1:2018 Standard

Revised version

ISO / IEC 20000-1: 2018 was published on 30 September 2018. There are several significant changes in the new edition, but overall the extent of the changes may be considered moderate. A key change is the adoption of the common framework for an ISO management system standard with a common high level structure (HLS), common text and definitions. Hence, the document is completely restructured compared with the 2011 edition. Certain other important changes in IT service management should also be noted.

How do we prepare for implementation of the new version?

We recommend that you begin preparing for the transition as early as possible and plan properly in order to incorporate the necessary changes into your management system.

Recommended transition steps:

  1. Familiarise yourself with the content and requirements of the new standard. If you are a current user of the 2011 standard, you should focus on the changes in the requirements.
  2. Make sure that the relevant personnel in your organisation are trained and understand the requirements and the key changes.
  3. Identify the gaps that need to be addressed in order to meet the new requirements and establish an implementation plan.
  4. Implement activities and update your management system in order to meet the new requirements.

Transition timeframe

The transition period is 3 years from 30.09.2018.

All accredited ISO / IEC 20000-1: 2011 certificates cease to be valid after 29 September 2021.

From 29 March 2020 (18 months from 30.09.2018), TUV NORD and the other certification bodies cease to carry out initial audits of the 2011 version of the standard.
